This painting looks at two different stages of life existing beside each other. The flower on the left is past its prime but not fully wilted, while the bud on the right is still beginning to grow. I became really interested in how differently I approached painting each of them.
The bud is painted in a much more refined way with brighter color and no underpainting showing through, while the older flower has areas that feel more unstable and unresolved. Some parts remain refined while others start to break apart. I wanted the surface of the painting itself to reflect the differences between new life and aging, and the way time slowly changes both form and color.
